This week, Viridor was delighted to announce its latest charitable donations partners. St Raphaels Hospice, The British Home and Merton Mencap have been nominated by employees to be corporate charity partners for 2019/20. Delegates from each of the charities visited the Beddington Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) in Sutton to receive a cheque for £3333.

As part of the commitment to develop lasting relationships within communities around its operational sites across the UK, Viridor is committed to supporting the fantastic work of local charitable causes. Nationally Viridor have selected, with the help of its employees, 12 twelve charity partners and three are based around the Beddington site.

This milestone is the latest in a long-term partnership between the Beddington ERF and the charities, with the three charities initially being selected by construction workers at the Beddington ERF to recognise safe working in 2016 and 2017. Every day the ERF safely transforms non-recyclable waste from households in Croydon, Kingston, Merton and Sutton into enough energy to power c. 55,000 homes.

St Raphaels Hospice is a local charity that provides exceptional end of life care to the people of Merton and Sutton. Based at the Chaucer Centre in Morden, Merton Mencap supports children and adults with a learning disability, and their family carers. The British Home is based in Croydon and offers care for people with severe disabilities and long term medical conditions.

Mike Stafford, Head of Contracts for Viridor said of the charity partner announcement:

“We are delighted to continue our partnership with three local charities in south London. Every day across Croydon, Merton and Sutton (and further afield) St Raphaels Hospice, The British Home and Merton Mencap work tirelessly to support communities in some of the toughest times. Their stories are truly inspiring and the team onsite are really proud to be able to support this fantastic work. We first started supporting them in 2016 and over the years the level of care these charities administer is truly staggering. We are pleased to play a small part in their work.”

Andy Whittington, Chief Executive of Merton Mencap, gave his thoughts following the visit to the ERF:

“On behalf of Merton Mencap we would like to say a big thank you everyone at Viridor for choosing to support us. We first became aware of the Beddington ERF in 2017 when workers at the construction site nominated to donate money to us to recognise a safety milestone. It is brilliant to see the ERF working, to see where unwanted material comes to be put to good use and it really makes you think about making sure we put the right stuff in the right bin.”

Emily Kaniecki, Head of Donor Development for St Raphaels Hospice said of the donation:

“Thank you very much to Viridor for this kind donation – it truly will make a big difference! At St Raphael’s Hospice we are committed to ensuring that the care we provide to patients and their families is free of charge and this means we need to raise around £4m every year. This donation can immediately be put to good use and could support 20 visits to a patient in their home. It is incredible that we initially met Viridor in 2016 and are still receiving support.”

Paul Perkin, Chief Executive of The British Home noted of the announcement:

“At the British Home we have a specialist facility providing medical care and rehabilitation services to those in the community with a neuro-disability. We are very grateful to continue our partnership with Viridor and this latest donation will support our latest investment in assistive technology and new equipment for patients that require rehabilitation. We rely on donations from local businesses and communities and every penny is incredibly special.”
