Iceland Ireland Launches Its First Reduced Plastic Packaging Christmas Dinner With Plastic Packaging Removed Completely From 14 Products.

4 December, 19

Iceland Ireland is offering customers a new way of making it on to the nice list this Christmas – by helping them opt for reduced plastic packaging on their Christmas dinner. Iceland Ireland will be the first Irish supermarket to offer all three courses in either plastic free or reduced plastic packaging, the latest move in its global-first commitment to remove plastic from all own label packaging by the end of 2023.

Plastic consumption increases significantly at Christmas time, taking into account the excess packaging used on many gifts, plastic found in wrapping paper, and additional grocery items purchased as families stock up for the season.

Iceland Ireland has been working with its suppliers on the project for months, developing technologies and innovations with new and existing food and packaging suppliers across its supply chain. Many of the solutions implemented are being seen for the first time in the Ireland, such as those for the Three Bird Roast and Stuffed Turkey Breast Joint. The changes made to the packaging will reflect an average 97% reduction in plastic across those products in the range.

The range includes 14 products which are entirely plastic free, including Stuffing Balls, Mini Pies and a selection of party food favourites.

In addition to this, Iceland Ireland has redeveloped packaging across six additional lines to significantly reduce plastic packaging on Christmas classics. One example of the redeveloped packaging is that used for Iceland Ireland’s Perfect Turkey Crown, previously packaged in a plastic bag, now offered in a recyclable paper wrap with only a remaining plastic band seal.

Ron Metcalfe, Managing Director of Iceland Ireland said:

“In line with our ongoing commitment as a business, we challenged ourselves to provide our customers with a delicious festive offering with minimal plastic packaging. This was no easy task as much of the replacement packaging was not immediately available, however, we are now very proud to offer customers all the joy of an Irish Christmas while allowing them to reduce their plastic footprint. We know from listening to our customers that there is a real desire to make a difference and we are committed to continuing to develop innovative solutions that allow all of us collectively to make a difference now and into the future”.

Since making its commitment in 2018, Iceland Ireland has continued to work towards its plastic free commitment, with significant updates to come in 2020.
